How Many Bundles Do I Need? A Length-by-Length Guide
Use our simple length-by-length chart to work out how many 100 g bundles you need, with or without a closure or frontal.
"How many bundles do I need?" is one of the most common questions we hear, and the honest answer is: it depends on the length you want, how full you like your hair, and whether you are adding a closure or frontal. Order too few and the ends look thin and see-through. Order too many and you spend more than necessary and end up with a bulky install. This guide walks you through the numbers, with a simple chart you can use before you check out.
Start with the bundle weight
Most human hair bundles, including ours, are sold as 100 g bundles. The weight stays the same whatever the length, which is the key to understanding bundle counts. A 10-inch bundle and a 26-inch bundle both weigh 100 g, so the longer bundle spreads the same amount of hair over more length. The result is a shorter weft track per inch of hair and visibly less density at the ends.
That is why longer styles need more bundles. It is not that your head is bigger; it is that each long bundle simply covers less volume.
Bundle chart by length
Use this chart as a starting point for a full sew-in or wig on an average-sized head. If you like extra-full hair, add one bundle to the number shown.
| Length | No closure (leave-out) | With closure | With frontal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8–12 inches | 3 bundles | 2–3 bundles | 2 bundles |
| 14–18 inches | 3 bundles | 3 bundles | 2–3 bundles |
| 20–24 inches | 3–4 bundles | 3 bundles | 3 bundles |
| 26–30 inches | 4 bundles | 3–4 bundles | 3–4 bundles |
| 32 inches and longer | 4–5 bundles | 4 bundles | 4 bundles |
These are guidelines, not strict rules. Your stylist, your head size and the look you want all play a part.
Why a closure or frontal changes the number
A closure or frontal adds its own hair to the install. A closure covers the front center or crown, and a frontal covers the full hairline from ear to ear. Both reduce the area your wefts need to fill, so you can often use one fewer bundle than a full leave-out sew-in.
A frontal covers more of the head than a closure, which is why the frontal column sometimes shows a lower number. If you are deciding between the two, our closure vs frontal guide explains sizes and lace types in detail.
Mixing lengths for a natural finish
Natural hair isn't one blunt length, so many people order bundles in staggered lengths, for example 18, 20 and 22 inches. This creates soft layers and keeps the ends looking full. When you mix lengths, choose your closure or frontal a little shorter than your shortest bundle, such as a 16-inch closure with 18, 20 and 22-inch bundles, so it blends into the layers.
How texture affects your bundle count
Texture changes how full the same weight of hair appears.
- Straight hair lies flat and shows thinness most easily, especially at long lengths. Consider the higher number in the chart.
- Wavy hair has natural movement that adds body, so the standard number usually looks full.
- Curly hair shrinks and expands, giving the most volume per bundle. Many curly installs look full with the lower number, though the stretched length is longer than the curled length.
Raw Indian temple hair also has a naturally soft body wave in many batches, even in hair sold as straight. That gentle movement helps a moderate bundle count look full without heavy styling. If you plan to wear your hair sleek and pressed most of the time, lean toward the higher number in the chart so the ends don't look sparse after flat ironing.
One more tip: when you compare curly lengths, always check whether the length is measured stretched or curled. Hair is measured stretched, so a 20-inch curly bundle will sit noticeably shorter once the curl pattern springs back. Order a little longer than your target length if you want the curls to land in a particular spot.
Single drawn vs double drawn bundles
The way hair is drawn also affects the count. Single drawn bundles keep the natural mix of long and short strands, so the ends taper. Double drawn bundles have more of the shorter strands removed, so the hair stays thicker from top to bottom. If you choose double drawn hair, you may get a fuller look at the ends with the same number of bundles, which is especially useful for very long styles.
Bundles for wigs
When you make a custom wig, the numbers are similar to a sew-in with a closure or frontal. A few extra points help:
- A smaller wig cap uses slightly less hair, while a large cap may need an extra bundle.
- Higher density looks such as 180% or 200% generally need one extra bundle at most lengths.
- For bob wigs in the 10 to 14-inch range, two bundles plus a closure is often enough.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Ordering the same count for every length. Three bundles at 12 inches looks very different from three bundles at 28 inches.
- Buying bundles and lace separately months apart. Natural hair varies in tone, so order your bundles and closure or frontal together for the best match.
- Forgetting about thinning. Cutting bundles to fit, or layering heavily, uses up hair. If your stylist plans lots of layers, order an extra bundle.
- Not checking final costs. Prices are in USD, and customs duties and import taxes are set by your country and paid by the buyer.
Quick examples
Here is how the chart works in practice for a few popular looks:
- Shoulder-length body wave with a closure: 3 bundles at 14, 16 and 16 inches plus a 14-inch 4x4 closure.
- Mid-back straight install with a frontal: 3 bundles at 22, 24 and 24 inches plus a 20-inch 13x4 frontal.
- Extra-long waist-length look: 4 bundles at 28, 30, 30 and 32 inches plus a 26-inch 13x6 frontal.

Quick answers
Is two bundles enough for a full head?
Two bundles can work for short styles, around 8 to 14 inches, when paired with a closure or frontal. For longer lengths or a leave-out install, most people need three or more.
Can I color my bundles after they arrive?
Yes, human hair can be colored by a professional. Keep in mind that colored or altered hair can't be returned, so check everything before you start.
Do longer bundles weigh more?
No. Our bundles are 100 g each regardless of length, so longer bundles have less hair per inch and you typically need more of them.
